Gym Anxiety
Are you the girl who sits in the gym car park trying to gain confidence to leave your car then end up overthinking and driving home?
Are you the girl who feels embarrassed to do a certain exercise because you think you are doing it wrong and everyone around you is watching and laughing?
Are you the girl who only uses cardio machines because the thought of using weights makes you feel intimidated next to the big guys?
Are you the girl who hides in the studio doing a core workout because it’s less busy?
Are you the girl who sits on her phone texting her friends scrolling on social media in-between sets as a comfort blanket to make you feel less awkward?
That girl, was me!
These feelings are normal, they are common and they are valid.
Anxiety doesn’t mean there’s something wrong with you – it’s a feeling that makes your body respond in a certain way.
Talking is the best therapy you can have. Tell a friend or family member how you’re feeling, maybe they feel the same way as you. Sharing your experience and emotions can normalise how a certain situation or place makes you feel so others can understand your feelings better and prevent future triggers.
Familiarise yourself with the building, if you are new to a gym ask reception or book an induction online where a member of staff will show you around. This will help you get to know where equipment is situated for your next workout. This will also help build relationships with staff resulting in you knowing a friendly face on your next visit.
Two methods I use to help me relieve anxiety, which does help!!!
Have you heard of the 3 3 3 rule?
Identify 3 objects in the room you are in
Identify 3 sounds around you
Move 3 body parts
Have you heard of the 5 5 5 rule?
Breathe in for 5 seconds
Hold your breath for 5 seconds
Breathe out for 5 seconds
